project2: Mapping






i, Development / alterations / versions / complications / minimising.

ii, Little bit of the looking at folds done - how design could interact with fold pattern. Decided upon using conventional oS map style fold, as results of explorations resulted in easily damaged and overcomplicated structures. This fold pattern is simple, durable.

iii, Design for the reverse, with instructions forming the cover 'book' of the map when folded down, and a pattern design as space occupier.

iv, Final map design.

The flight map, strong in form, is left as the centre piece.
Key text is rotated and positioned in such a way so that form is more evident - pushed to shape, a cascade from the map, legible at the twist of a neck. This also brings the small dispersed elements together to become more formidable within the space - with more energy- things that I felt were missing but necessary for the design deserved to retain the all this white.

In this version, the Alphabetisation in-key is replaced by simple, bold black marks, as I felt some weight was needed (if dispersed), in the mass of space and light marks, as definition to this new form; this also means that it relies upon the reader to instinct upon the correct text to match location - this I aid with the use of spacing and direction of text :
There are two columns of text at separate angles, a first that is densely packed and a second that is loosely, appearing as separate passages, therefore the first will be finished before the second is started and the eyes will not pass from the left to the right one.

oWill Be printed on relatively thin paper for a map, A3.


..With instructions of how to construct a compass to aid you on reverse - the parts would be included with the map.


Base (o) is college, the scale is 1:220 000, A3.
Destinations are found alphabetised at the end of their independent flight paths, letters relating to the index, where the name, distance away in meters and polar direction is found.

Top is a sample of an OS Map from 1971: The colours, lettering and quality of line speak of something not quite as mechanical as todays versions - something made and not generated. It isn't as cold and rigid, there is clutter - a more real representation of the city in this sense.

Bottom is a map displaying age/sex within the London Boroughs in 1969. As a picture it is interesting - the shapes created by areas and also by numbers and figures, the varying density of parts across the map and the three weights of line for the three parts - Borough boundaries the heaviest, Names the medium and diagrams finest.
Made for informing, from facts and figures, something I find very pretty is made.

Project2: Mapping


'J.P.233 in C.S.O. Blue' by Simon Patterson, Found in the book 'Mapping Graphic Navigational Systems'
is a map of commercial airplane paths around the Globe. Graphically it is gracious and bare - thin lines intersecting a large space, it was what I had in mind when proposing the idea for the map.

I looked then, into how the structure and detailing of the map, could be worked somehow, by the folds themselves - to make an almost unmarked surface able to navigate you, but the results were unworkable.
Studied origami techniques and from books of paperwork, into varieties of ways the paper can be worked and folded ,not only into smaller forms, but how to alter the map surface itself, such as panel-dooring that is used for traditional advent calendars.
One idea was a pop-out constructible castle, the could be burnt when you are lost and cold...


Project2: Mapping

Pt. 1 - A treasure hunt around London to various shops/agencies/places of significance for our course.

Pt. 2 - Mapping 'A visual representation of a place and its dynamics on a plane surface by means of linkage.'

  • Make work that describes the links to your chosen areas.
  • The end product must take the form of a folded map.
  • Consider the context.

= Make a map to the places sent to on a treasure hunt.
Initial ideas.

  • Purely text -
literally describe the route and possibly experiences (construct a story around the directions which may give the journey sense of importance/history - to give the a map some soul) The text could be laid as a block of text, for the sakes of interest of juxtaposition, which would be difficult and impractical, or each passage put in geographic place upon the paper.
  • Flight path -
from point to point, an approach resulting in a potentially clean image, although it may be interesting to add some 'noise' to the elements created, to play against this. Perhaps only the lines of the path will stand - without geographical reference, this would demand of some other navigational system to be useful.
  • An Os Adaptation - simply an aesthetic exercise.
  • Compass -
I remember that a simple compass can be made out of a piece of cork, a needle, magnet an glass of water, so the graphic practice would be first of all, instructions. This could be accompanied by textual directions or a map.

We wandered the corridors and found laminated floor plans which we collated to help us build an image of the entire place as the whole that it is in our heads. Looked like this, but not a San Francisco apartment. Contemplated. Discussed. Came up with something:

The first is a group project, to 'create a system to communicate the orientation and function of the spaces that make up the college.'
